The 2024 Ocean Decade Conference taking place in Spain, Barcelona from 10 – 12 April 2024, will serve as a significant milestone in the implementation of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
As we enter the fourth year of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, led by UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, this transformative initiative has brought together a diverse array of global partners dedicated to steering essential scientific efforts toward shaping the future of our oceans.
At this crucial juncture, it's pivotal to reflect upon the Ocean Decade's achievements since its inception and pinpoint key areas that demand focused action over the next three to five years.
The 2024 Ocean Decade Conference will uphold its commitment to "delivering the science we need for the ocean we want." This conference will unite the global Ocean Decade community and collaborators. It aims to commemorate accomplishments, evaluate progress, and collectively chart future priorities.
Positioned as a significant waypoint on the journey toward 2030, this event will encompass a broad spectrum of Ocean Decade Challenges. Among these critical concerns are addressing climate change, ensuring food security, managing biodiversity effectively, nurturing a sustainable ocean economy, combatting pollution, and mitigating natural hazards.
Over the course of three days, the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference will establish the groundwork for bolstering the sustainable governance of our oceans. It endeavors to spark science-driven innovation at both global and local levels, ensuring inclusivity and leaving no individual or community behind in this collective pursuit.
