Description
The Laboratory of Ecological Engineering and Technology of the Department of Environmental Engineering of Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH) has been established on 1998 and it is one of the seven laboratories of the Department. Lab’s main subjects cover extended scientific areas: the ecosystem management and restoration; environmental hydraulics and hydrodynamics; hydrogeological characteristics of aquifers; ecological agriculture and stock farming with emphasis on the reduction of pollutants emission to the environment, application of models; operational tools and DSS with the use of machine learning, neural networks and fuzzy models; water resources management with the use of GIS. The Laboratory has the facilities and equipment required to support its research and educational activities, including 90 sq.m of indoor space and 200 sq.m of outdoor space in the facilities of the Department at Kimmeria, Xanthi, and it is properly equipped with instrumentation for water quality analyses, modeling and experimental simulations, and field measurements, including a van-type vehicle transformed to mobile analysis station, and a Zodiac boat. Educational activities of the Laboratory include teaching of several graduate and postgraduate lessons and support of a large number of diplomas, post-graduate and Ph.D. theses, while its research activities include several European Union-funded Research Projects. Further, the Laboratory services the public performing among others physical and chemical analyses at cost prices. The Department of Environmental Engineering of Democritus University of Thrace acts as a research associate to the environmental problems of various national, regional and local organizations (local authorities, environmental management bodies, water and wastewater authorities, etc.). Over the past decade, the Department has undertaken over 160 research projects and studies in various topics and scientific disciplines. DUTH is located in the Region of East Macedonia & Thrace (R.E.M.Th.), at the North-Eastern part of Greece. Administratively, as a NUTS II Level, is coded as [GR11].
Role In Project
DUTH is the WP2 leader on the development and integration of novel sensors, the deployment, operation and maintenance of sensoric systems and the collection of on-line, RT data from case study sites, together with the NRT data from drones, benthic stations, satellites. Furthermore, DUTH participates in WP1, WP3, WP5, WP6, WP8-WP11.
